With the harsh realization that climate change is definitely a part of our lives and that environmental issues are problems we must find a way to rectify, sustainable fashion labels are a league on the rise and this includes sustainable swimwear. Head down the eco-conscious route when choosing your new bikini or one piece as we provide a few of the labels you should include in your swim wardrobe this season because we believe that Sustainability is Sexy at Butterflies and Bikinis! One label and brand that is near and dear to us, located in Sunny Southern California, Vitamin A Swimwear was founded in 2000 by designer Amahlia Stevens. Amahlia, a California native, grew up on the beaches and lived in bikinis. She earned her degree in Illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and designed for top brands around the world. Prior to launching Vitamin A, Amahlia worked on a design project with Yvon Chouirnard, the founder of Patagonia and a leader in the Environmental movement. During her time with Yvon, she learned how he was changing the outdoor industry by creating technical fabrics from recycled plastic bottles. She was determined to do something similar with swimwear and while researching her options, was told time and time again by fabric suppliers that there was 'no market' for swimwear made from recycled fibers. She decided to design it herself and worked for three years with the top mills in Italy, Canada and California to perfect the process, introducing EcoLux, the first premium swim fabric that combines sustainability and technology, creating a fabric that fits like a second skin. Since then, Amahlia's vision has now become an industry standard and goal. Vitamin A also employs waterless digital printing and also uses other sustainable materials in their beachwear like Linen, organic cotton and polyester fiber made from recycled plastic bottoms.Continuing with innovative technology advances, Amahlia has introduced the BioRib fabric in her Vitamin A 2019 Resort Collection, an organic plant based fiber, with no impact on our food chain, 20% less Carbon emissons, lower water consumption and flourocarbon free, the fabric is a soft, on trend ribbed fabric you'll love touching and wearing. The collection offers high waisted, high leg, and teeny brazilian bottoms with a multitude of swimsuit tops to choose from in soft muted colors, bold blacks, crisp whites, tiny dots and much, much more.Another long time eco friendly label, Reformation, known for their apparel, launched their swim line in April 2018, with an emphasis on its use of 85 per cent recycled materials. The label has pieces ranging from trendy bikinis to vintage-inspired silhouettes, cut in summery hues and print.
So get out, shop eco friendly and make an impact on our earth, remember Sustainability is Sexy at Butterflies and Bikinis!
